"Children to be pen-pals with the elderly"
If I was Children’s Mayor of Leeds I would ask for there to be a pen-pal system between school children and old people’s homes. A school could be ‘twinned’ with a home in the same or different area in Leeds and would write letters about their lives and experiences- no personal information or addresses would be shared (just chatter).
How my idea will make a difference:
My idea would benefit children with their handwriting and sentence structure. It would give lonely elderly people something to look forward to and something to occupy their time.
Is it a low cost/no cost idea and can children be involved in it?
It would only cost a small donation to buy stamps to send a batch of letters and someone to organise each end of the agreement. It would also cost some time in class for writing the letters. My school, Westgate Primary School in Otley, would be willing do it on a trial basis. We would encourage other schools to join us. We could put donation boxes in shops to raise money for writing paper and stamps if money was an issue for schools.
